She had very pale gums, a very sore distended abdomen and developed a fever over her day with us. Blood tests showed evidence of an infection/inflammation, anaemia (low red blood cell count) and changes in her blood proteins. X-rays showed fluid buildup in her abdomen. A sample of this fluid was sent to an external lab for analysis. Lolly was referred to the Animal Referral Centre (ARC) in Auckland urgently as fluid results looked highly suspicious of FIP while we waited for her Coronavirus PCR results.
FIP(Feline Infectious Peritonitis) is a condition associated with feline coronavirus infection. Symptoms include low energy, tiredness, reduced or no appetite, weight loss and fluctuating fevers. These signs can last a few days to a few weeks. WetFIP usually presents with fluid buildup in the abdomen (swollen belly) or the chest (difficulty breathing).
Until recently an FIP diagnosis had a grave prognosis. But... Once ARC confirmed no other reasons for the fluid in Lolly's abdomen on ultrasound and her Coronavirus PCR from the fluid was positive, she was started on a 12-week course of oral Remdesivir. She had to have regular weigh-ins, temperature checks and blood tests during this time to track her response to the medication.
A few weeks ago she had her final check and stopped medication. She has gained weight and her feisty personality is back! If she has no recurrence of her symptoms she will have a 12-week postmedication blood test and officially be in remission!!!
Lolly is now officially in remission from FIP as of today!!! She's 4.2kg (was 3.02kg at diagnosis), normal temperature, is hunting and living her best life!
