Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be a great way of providing pain relief for your dog, especially those who cannot tolerate other options.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an aspect of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) that is used to help the body heal itself by correcting energy imbalances.

What happens in an acupuncture session?

The technique requires inserting fine needles into the dog’s body at specified points, called acupuncture points, where nerves and blood vessels converge. These points are located in sites called meridians, which are energy channels that transmit energy throughout the dog’s body.

The inserted needles guide “chi” or vital energy along the meridians. Placed in these identified points, the needles enhance blood circulation, improving healing ability. Acupuncture also stimulates the nervous system and increases the release of anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving substances to reduce a dog’s discomfort.

How long will it take to work?

The effects of acupuncture treatment are cumulative so there is a benefit to repeated sessions, but the goal is to achieve the greatest degree of improvement and maintain that level with the fewest treatments necessary.

Are there any side effects?

There are few side effects with acupuncture, but some dogs may be sore or stiff following a treatment session, while other patients appear tired. These symptoms usually resolve within 24-48 hours.

How can acupuncture be of value to pets?

It is very beneficial in managing joint or muscle pain, especially in older animals that can’t tolerate other medications as well. Most animals find it a very relaxing process, which is a real bonus.

Who is qualified in acupuncture?

Dr Sarah Tutt of our Beachlands clinic is qualified in veterinary acupuncture and she offers acupuncture as a treatment option for many conditions including arthritis, muscle, and back pain.
