Summer safety for your pets

Summer safety for pets

Here are some tips to help your pets stay safe and comfortable during the New Zealand summer:

Heat Safety:

Avoid Overheating:
•    Limit exercise during the hottest parts of the day (midday).
•    Opt for early morning or late evening walks.
•    Choose shady routes and avoid hot pavements.
•    Provide plenty of fresh, cool water.
•    Consider cooling mats or ice packs for pets indoors.
•    Never leave your pet in a parked car, even for a short time.

Recognize Signs of Heatstroke:
•    Excessive panting
•    Increased heart rate
•    Vomiting
•    Lethargy
•    Collapse
•    If you notice these signs, seek veterinary attention immediately.

Parasite Prevention:

Flea and Tick Control:
•    Consult your vet for appropriate flea and tick prevention products.
•    Check your pet regularly for ticks and remove them carefully.
Worm treatment:
•    Talk to your vet about worm treatment medication, especially if your pet spends time outdoors.

Water Safety:

Supervise Near Water:
•    Never leave your pet unattended near bodies of water, such as pools, lakes, or rivers.
•    Consider a life jacket for dogs that enjoy swimming.
Avoid Toxic Algae:
•    Be cautious of toxic algae blooms in water bodies, as they can be very harmful to pets.

Other Tips:

Grooming:
•    Regular brushing can help remove loose hair and reduce shedding.
•    Consider a shorter haircut for dogs with thick coats.
Paw Protection:
•    Hot pavements can burn your pet's paws. Walk on grass or walk during the cooler parts of the day or at night.
Dietary Needs:
•    Ensure your pet has access to fresh water at all times.
•    Consult your vet about any dietary adjustments needed for the warmer weather.
Emergency Preparedness:
•    Have your pet's microchip information up-to-date.
•    Keep a first-aid kit for pets on hand.

By following these tips, you can help your pets enjoy a safe and healthy New Zealand summer.
