Coming into winter proper, we’ve been lucky to hang onto some of that extra feed that grew rapidly over a wet summer. This means we’re seeing a large proportion of animals having maintained good condition through autumn, which means they are at a lower risk of undernutrition throughout winter when the grass growth typically slows down. This is nice to see after a few years of up-and-down weather and droughts!
The negative to the wet weather is we’ve been seeing unprecedented amounts of foot rot in cattle, sheep and goats, and have seen the odd case of pododermatitis in alpacas. Be sure to have an up-close look at any animal you see with a sore foot ASAP, either checking it yourself or getting us out to have a look and treat any issues occurring.
Lastly, we’re very close to lambing and calving! We have a few tips below to make sure things go smoothly with this busy time, as well as a good list of items to be stocked up on for lambing. Trust me when I say, having a good lambing kit is a great way to avoid the proverbial poo hitting the fan when one of the girls inevitably decides to lamb at 1 AM!
